Athens teachers ballot “Pirates in Education” managed to get one out of nine seats, changing the “status quo” of the Greek Teachers Federation (DOE) and sending the first ever Pirate unionist to their body of representatives. By the time when this article was written it is not clear yet who of the three candidates (Thanasis Gounaris, Markos Papaioannou , or Electra Pagoni) would take the seat but this is the first election worldwide that sees a Pirate unionist elected to a top position running as a Pirate.
Back at the general assembly of the Pirate Party International in Kazan on 20/21 op april the PPI accepted new ordinary members. One of them is the Pirate Party of South Korea, which we will introduce to you. Therefore we interviewed their founder Gyung Chan Lee about their current situation.
One of the first things that the new PPI board did was to send out a call for offers for the next PPI conference. This is already an improvement compared with the preparation of the last year’s conference when the call for offers went out later than they had planned. The board still recommends the hosting nation to hold the conference in “March/April or May” despite most European Pirate Parties being in the middle of their campaign work for the EU elections that will take place 22-25 May.

During the recent General Assembly of the national German Pirate Party in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz in April 2013 the Pirate Times met Maru Tom and Chiaki Atsumi (Minci) from the Pirate Movement in Japan. Despite some facts that burdened the atmosphere of the general assembly, data and numbers show that PPI continues to inspire and attract Pirates worldwide. PPI accepted 14 new members, increasing the number of Pirate Parties in PPI to 42 countries . They also accepted a further six observer members, elected a new board and voted on some statute changes.
One of the areas that the Pirate Parties are trying to act on is the adjustment of politics to a new digital age. This can be achieved through adding more transparency to the governments, opening them up for more collaboration and use of data and turning the government into more of an eGovernment in order to both use more of the benefits brought by our digital age and protect us from its risks.
On 18 May 2013 the new Polish Pirate Party had its first General Assembly. The party was founded last year after the previous one was dissolved by a court order in 2009, the new party was created by many of the people involved in the first one and it is considered a second incarnation of the same party.
