Austrian Pirates Advertise on Youporn

On Sunday 27 September 2015 the Austrian pirates (PPAT) have a local election in the region of Upper Austria. One of their focuses for their election campaign is the question of the right to privacy. They launched a campaign site for privacy and decided to put an advertisement on various porn sites to reach people with their message.

The advertisement banner says “Johanna wants to watch you” and has a picture of interior minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner. PPAT wishes to counter the idea that “if you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to hide”. There is a large shift towards a surveillance state in Austria which the Pirates wish to counter.

PPAT are participating in several municipalities and cities. However, due to limited resources they have chosen to focus mainly on one city where they have a good chance of entering the local parliament, Linz. The low threshold means they will need only about 1.7% of votes to enter there.

We need more opportunities for the people in Linz, more space for alternative living, such as urban gardens. In our representative democracy, the will of the people is almost never considered, for me it is important to implement the concerns of Linz.
– Claus-Peter Wiesinger (top candidate for Linz)
